Where do kazoos come from?

Since today is National Kazoo Day, NPR has a story about one of two places in the U.S. that manufacture the plastic toy instruments anyone can play.

NPR visited Kazoobie Kazoos and CEO Stephen Murray for the story and among the factoids in the article I found interesting were that they date back to the mid-1800s in the U.S. when they were called “down south submarines.” Doesn’t have quite the ring to it that kazoo does does it?
