The San Francisco Chronicle published a special section earlier this week marking the 30-year anniversary of the cynide-laced-Kool-aid-drinking mass suicide of Jim Jones’s Peoples Temple cult in South America.
Included is an article written a little over a year before the tragedy that mentions Rosaylnn Carter in the lede and goes on to describe Jim Jones’s powerful presence in local politics and a series of disturbing on-the-record reports from former members. Thirty years later, the tips of impending doom for the hundreds of people in his flock are painfully obvious.
The article, which ran in New West magazine in August 1977, was reportedly rejected for publication in the Chronicle.
It’s called “Inside Peoples Temple.”
