Moneyball author Michael Lewis had a piece in the New York Times Magazine over the weekend that’s capturing a lot of attention.

Entitled, perhaps inaccurately, “The No-Stats All-Star,” the piece takes a look at the impact not always apparent in a box score that players like Shane Battier can have on an NBA game.

Money quote:

“Here we have a basketball mystery: a player is widely regarded inside the N.B.A. as, at best, a replaceable cog in a machine driven by superstars. And yet every team he has ever played on has acquired some magical ability to win.”

The NBA game and all talk of superstars Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett and whoever else is the flavor of the week these days bores me to no end.

But an 8,800-word piece about an unsung hero, Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey and a new way to measure production on the court just might be enough to get me to watch the Rockets play on TV this post-season.
